Bellissimo.

Hey guys...Thanks for taking a look at my Ernannaq design. She is still in build, but getting closer to playing with the dolphins!
I spent a lot of time getting the shapes of her profile and sections just right to make her very svelte. Yes, she have very low volume. This feature is primarily for rolling purposes. Also, when in need of resting, the paddler can lay in the water without the kayak trying to push him under. This will happen to larger volume kayaks, but very low volume kayaks are very forgiving in this situation.
As I was about to lay the first foam (divinicell 60H) strip, I was debating about stripping her in some nice cedar I have that's been waiting patiently. I've calculated that 1/8 inch thick (3.2 mm) white cedar/6 oz twill-weave E-glass composite would weigh about the same as the Divinicell-cored boat, however the cedar cored boat would not be nearly as stiff as the foam cored boat. But, the cedar would look better to some eyes, and stiffness be damned. In the end, I chose to go with the Divinicell so that I could achieve the lightest, stiffest, highest performance boat that I could to build. The next Ernannaq will probably be built with that beautiful white cedar that I’ve been hording for a special boat.

I designed this boat to be very snug fitting to the paddler. If a paddler feels he needs a lot of room, this is not the boat for him. I am roughly 205 lbs (93 kg) and have an athletic build with no flab. However, my legs and buttocks are of good size due to a lot of speed skating.
In order to ensure a good fit, I constructed a mock-up of the cockpit area, with the idea of creating a vessel in which the paddler is truly one with the boat. The fit is quite snug, but I arranged the cockpit rim to allow easy entrance and egress. From this point of view, the boat was designed around the dimensions acquired from the cockpit mock-up. Every move the paddler makes will be telegraphed to the boat. Yes, the paddler will need to have good technique to get the required performance out of her, but I believe she will reward the paddler with fast handling and very easy rolling manners.

Some may not feel comfortable in such a narrow kayak. I wanted the fastest, easiest rolling boat I could fit in. Having been paddling an Epic V12 Ultra surfski at least four times a week this past summer, in the rough conditions of the Albemarle Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, I believe the Ernannaq will be have nice manners compared to the ski. Yes, she’ll require good paddling skills, but she will also reward the practiced paddler with excellent performance.

Thank you for your interest in the Ernannaq. I will soon be posting more pictures of her build progress.
